Believe it. Achieve it.
It sounds so simple it is often difficult to accept. The Oprah’s 3rd Life Class focused on famous people who always kept their end goal mind by completely believing that what would happen, not might, or maybe, butwould happen. The message is not new, we’ve heard it before but it was inspiring because….well….because, excuse me if I sound cliche, but she kept it real. Here are my three reasons for finding this class useful.
Oprah stated that while she had no idea what exactly she would be doing when she was younger, she knew that it would not be the same as her mother and she knew that she would be really, really good at it. Also important to note, that her desire and knowing was not out of scorn or bitterness or of a “not want” place but more from “I am” place (as in I am going to be doing something that is authentic to me). She focused on that thought throughout the early part of her career and progressively worked towards doing things that resonated with her authentic self.
Why do I like this?
It is consistent with successful people who know what they are meant to do (e.g. Michael Jordan who practiced basketball in his sleep) and follow that dream passionately and diligently.
Oprah places emphasis on the fact that she did not always know her purpose and she, like many people, did not know what her purpose was. However, she provides an answer for many who ask this question. To sit quietly and listen to your higher self, higher power, to God and refers to a bible passage that supports this wisdom.
Why do I like this?
Because as badly as some may have wanted her to give them a book title or a counselor name or a magic trick that would make their purpose become instantly known, she did not. The answer lies within. It seems like it would be easier to pay money than to sit quiet or meditate for the answer but in the time it takes you to earn that money you could invest that time in yourself for a much richer reward than the money you earn in that same time period. As Steve Jobs advised,“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become…”
She showed interviews of other successful people (Ralph Lauren, Jim Carrey, J.K. Rowling) sharing their inner-thinking process during the beginning of their journey. Two lesser known successful women (the Spanx creator was one of them) who got inspired and had their beliefs about their business ideas re-ignited from watching Oprah’s show. They both immediately re-engaged their implementation actions around their ideas and became successful as a result of the action they took.
Why do I like this?
She demonstrates that it works. None of her example people were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Jim Carrey did not try to pass it off as fairy dust but rather how his laser focus drove the determined actions he continuously took. My favorite part was when he shared that you don’t perform powerful visualization sessions and then go eat a sandwich just waiting for things to appear rather you then go take the actions that will help make that visualization come to fruition.
I believe that in addition to the reasons stated above, what makes it ‘real’ is that Oprah is not selling anything. She gets nothing out of sharing with you her learned wisdom. and she gives explicit examples. I recognize that for scientists it would carry more credibility if she shared an evidence-based study with a control group of people who go through life randomly, one group that never think of their future and another of single-focused, believing individuals with a dream. However, when you hear the same message over and over again from successful people at some point you have to believe that there is something there. Unfortunately, for some of us it may take a crisis to be desperate enough to try this advice; similar to a person diagnosed with a fatal disease to try alternative medicine or making lifestyle changes like eating fruits and vegetables and exercising.
What I Know For Sure
Every time that I have come from a place of believing and love without resistance, what I desire comes to fruition. My biggest frustration with myself is being consistent. Gratitude, meditation and visualization work wonders for me, so much so I think of it as magical. My secret be told, it is the real reason why I created the HealthyLifeDesign Planner and Journal. My biggest passion is for everyone to be able to experience the magic.
